PEACE TO EARTH, GOOD WILL TOWARD MEN
i extracted this from the mountainwing.... well.. they send me mail everyday... i thot this is a nice story dat i can share wif every single one of u..... esp when the x mas season is here...
Pa and The Rifle
================
Pa never had much compassion for the lazy or those whosquandered their means and then never had enough for thenecessities. But for those who were genuinely in need, hisheart was as big as all outdoors. It was from him that Ilearned the greatest joy in life comes from giving, not from receiving.
It was Christmas Eve 1881. I was fifteen years old and feelinglike the world had caved in on me because there just hadn't beenenough money to buy me the rifle that I'd wanted for Christmas. We did the chores early that night for some reason. I justfigured Pa wanted a little extra time so we could read in theBible.
After supper was over I took my boots off and stretched out infront of the fireplace and waited for Pa to get down the oldBible. I was still feeling sorry for myself and, to be honest,I wasn't in much of a mood to read Scriptures. But Pa didn'tget the Bible, instead he bundled up again and went outside.I couldn't figure it out because we had already done all thechores. I didn't worry about it long though, I was too busywallowing in self-pity.
Soon Pa came back in. It was a cold clear night out and therewas ice in his beard. "Come on, Matt," he said. "Bundle upgood, it's cold out tonight." I was really upset then. Not onlywasn't I getting the rifle for Christmas, now Pa was dragging meout in the cold, and for no earthly reason that I could see. We'd already done all the chores, and I couldn't think of anythingelse that needed doing, especially not on a night like this.
But I knew Pa was not very patient at one dragging one's feetwhen he'd told them to do something, so I got up and put myboots back on and got my cap, coat, and mittens. Ma gave me amysterious smile as I opened the door to leave the house.Something was up, but I didn't know what.
Outside, I became even more dismayed. There in front of thehouse was the work team, already hitched to the big sled.Whatever it was we were going to do wasn't going to be a short, quick, little job. I could tell. We never hitched up this sledunless we were going to haul a big load.
Pa was already up on the seat, reins in hand. I reluctantlyclimbed up beside him. The cold was already biting at me.I wasn't happy. When I was on, Pa pulled the sled around thehouse and stopped in front of the woodshed. He got off and Ifollowed. "I think we'll put on the high sideboards," he said."Here, help me." The high sideboards! It had been a bigger jobthan I wanted to do with just the low sideboards on, butwhatever it was we were going to do would be a lot bigger withthe high sideboards on.
After we had exchanged the sideboards, Pa went into the woodshedand came out with an armload of wood---the wood I'd spent allsummer hauling down from the mountain, and then all Fall sawinginto blocks and splitting. What was he doing? Finally I saidsomething. "Pa," I asked, "what are you doing?" You been by theWidow Jensen's lately?" he asked. The Widow Jensen lived abouttwo miles down the road. Her husband had died a year or sobefore and left her with three children, the oldest being eight.Sure, I'd been by, but so what? "Yeah," I said, "Why?" "I rodeby just today," Pa said. "Little Jakey was out digging aroundin the woodpile trying to find a few chips. They're out ofwood, Matt."
That was all he said and then he turned and went back into thewoodshed for another armload of wood. I followed him. Weloaded the sled so high that I began to wonder if the horseswould be able to pull it. Finally, Pa called a halt to ourloading, then we went to the smoke house and Pa took down a bigham and a side of bacon. He handed them to me and told me toput them in the sled and wait.
When he returned he was carrying a sack of flour over his rightshoulder and a smaller sack of something in his left hand."What's in the little sack?" I asked. "Shoes. They're out ofshoes. Little Jakey just had gunny sacks wrapped around hisfeet when he was out in the woodpile this morning. I got thechildren a little candy too. It just wouldn't be Christmaswithout a little candy."
We rode the two miles to Widow Jensen's pretty much in silence.I tried to think through what Pa was doing. We didn't have muchby worldly standards. Of course, we did have a big woodpile, though most of what was left now was still in the form of logsthat I would have to saw into blocks and split before we coulduse it. We also had meat and flour, so we could spare that, butI knew we didn't have any money, so why was Pa buying them shoesand candy?
Really, why was he doing any of this? Widow Jensen had closerneighbors than us; it shouldn't have been our concern. We camein from the blind side of the Jensen house and unloaded the woodas quietly as possible, then we took the meat and flour andshoes to the door. We knocked. The door opened a crack and atimid voice said, "Who is it?" "Lucas Miles, Ma'am, and my son,Matt. Could we come in for a bit?"
Widow Jensen opened the door and let us in. She had a blanketwrapped around her shoulders. The children were wrapped inanother and were sitting in front of the fireplace by a verysmall fire that hardly gave off any heat at all. Widow Jensenfumbled with a match and finally lit the lamp. "We brought youa few things, Ma'am," Pa said and set down the sack of flour. Iput the meat on the table. Then Pa handed her the sack that hadthe shoes in it.
She opened it hesitantly and took the shoes out one pair at atime. There was a pair for her and one for each of thechildren---sturdy shoes, the best, shoes that would last. Iwatched her carefully. She bit her lower lip to keep it fromtrembling and then tears filled her eyes and started runningdown her cheeks. She looked up at Pa like she wanted to saysomething, but it wouldn't come out.
"We brought a load of wood too, Ma'am," Pa said. He turned tome and said, "Matt, go bring in enough to last awhile. Let'sget that fire up to size and heat this place up." I wasn't thesame person when I went back out to bring in the wood. I had abig lump in my throat and as much as I hate to admit it, therewere tears in my eyes too.
In my mind I kept seeing those three kids huddled around thefireplace and their mother standing there with tears runningdown her cheeks with so much gratitude in her heart that shecouldn't speak. My heart swelled within me and a joy that I'dnever known before, filled my soul. I had given at Christmasmany times before, but never when it had made so much difference.I could see we were literally saving the lives of these people.
I soon had the fire blazing and everyone's spirits soared. The kids started giggling when Pa handed them each a piece of candyand Widow Jensen looked on with a smile that probably hadn'tcrossed her face for a long time. She finally turned to us."God bless you," she said. "I know the Lord has sent you.The children and I have been praying that he would send one of hisangels to spare us."
In spite of myself, the lump returned to my throat and the tearswelled up in my eyes again. I'd never thought of Pa in thoseexact terms before, but after Widow Jensen mentioned it I couldsee that it was probably true. I was sure that a better manthan Pa had never walked the earth. I started remembering allthe times he had gone out of his way for Ma and me, and manyothers. The list seemed endless as I thought on it.
Pa insisted that everyone try on the shoes before we left.I was amazed when they all fit and I wondered how he had knownwhat sizes to get. Then I guessed that if he was on an errandfor the Lord that the Lord would make sure he got the right sizes.
Tears were running down Widow Jensen's face again when we stoodup to leave. Pa took each of the kids in his big arms and gavethem a hug. They clung to him and didn't want us to go.I could see that they missed their Pa, and I was glad that Istill had mine.
At the door Pa turned to Widow Jensen and said, "The Mrs.wanted me to invite you and the children over for Christmasdinner tomorrow. The turkey will be more than the three of uscan eat, and a man can get cantankerous if he has to eat turkeyfor too many meals. We'll be by to get you about eleven. It'llbe nice to have some little ones around again. Matt, here, hasn't been little for quite a spell." I was the youngest. My two brothers and two sisters had all married and had moved away.Widow Jensen nodded and said, "Thank you, Brother Miles.I don't have to say, "'May the Lord bless you,' I know for certainthat He will."
Out on the sled I felt a warmth that came from deep within and Ididn't even notice the cold. When we had gone a ways, Pa turnedto me and said, "Matt, I want you to know something. Your maand me have been tucking a little money away here and there allyear so we could buy that rifle for you, but we didn't havequite enough.
Then yesterday a man who owed me a little money from years backcame by to make things square. Your ma and me were realexcited, thinking that now we could get you that rifle, and Istarted into town this morning to do just that. But on the wayI saw little Jakey out scratching in the woodpile with his feetwrapped in those gunny sacks and I knew what I had to do.Son, I spent the money for shoes and a little candy for thosechildren. I hope you understand."
I understood, and my eyes became wet with tears again.I understood very well, and I was so glad Pa had done it.Now the rifle seemed very low on my list of priorities. Pa hadgiven me a lot more. He had given me the look on Widow Jensen'sface and the radiant smiles of her three children.
For the rest of my life, Whenever I saw any of the Jensen's, orsplit a block of wood, I remembered, and remembering broughtback that same joy I felt riding home beside Pa that night.Pa had given me much more than a rifle that night, he had givenme the best Christmas of my life.

Let us have a moment of silence... and pray for their safe journey...
Now, as the time of departure nears, let us wish the two young brave, kind, helpful souls known as Eric Tan Jia Hao and Eugene Kheng Wei Long, who are leaving their warm, cozzy and familiar home known as Singapore on this Thursday, 17th November, to travel to Kaolak, Thailand to help those less fortunate, those who are caught within the onslaught of the tsunami that occured almost a year ago (in a magnificent project known to us as Overseas Community Involvement Programme), a heartfelt Bon Voyage.
Wish they do not catch avian flu from Thailand and bring it back to Singapore. :P
Just kidding.
Remember to get us some sovernirs!! :D
Just kidding again.
Come back in one piece for the chalet, okay? LOL.

This is the 3rd time I type this blog...
I HATE MY COM! STOP CRUSHING!
While I was on my way home, I saw this guy chewing fishbal... remind me of something...
Nono... not someone choked while eating the fishball...
This’ll be a pretty long blog... so, wanna hear???
Heck u... I wanna say...
29th May 2005
*whenever there a food fair, my parents and I’ll nv miss it... and u can always find dis stall selling fish products... Big tasty fresh fishballs, both cooked and uncooked... daddy loves it*
well, some of u may noe dat daddy was veri ill… the doc discharged him as his condition was pretty stable... “stable”... but, he was not allowed to leave the hse, except to the hospital for check up... so, instead of being jailed in the hospital, he was being jailed at home...
well... expo was having food fair again... daddy knew I was going out on this faithful day... so he asked me his I could mke a trip to expo and get him some fishball... of coz I agreed... how could I reject him...
left to meet dada at 10.30am... went out and onli arrived expo at 9plus pm... was shopping and eating wif da... okie... entered expo... searching high and low for that fishball stall... couldn’t find it... but da managed to find it in the end...
“ni hai you mai yu yuan ma? Na zong yi tong de...” i asked
“mai wan le,” the stall-holder replied.
-_-“ and guess wad, when I walked to the other end of the stall(it takes up the space of 3 normal stall), I saw buckets of fishball in a pool of ice...abash...
of coz in the end, I bought one bucket...
reach home at bout 11... daddy was aslp... but mum told me daddy cried earlier... y??? cuz he thot I forget to but that fishball...
daddy nv cried b4 b4 the operation... he was a tough guy... both mentally and physically... but his illness mkes him weak both mentally and physically... yet, he’s still a loving family man...
it mke me feel extrememly guilty... b4 he was discharged, I didn’t visit him everyday as I need to work in kumon... traveling after sch to work as well as SGH wore me out... totally...but I noe I still mke an effort to visit him as often as possible... but after that vamp interferes wif my life, my energy exhaust at a faster rate... I didn’t mke an effort to rush down to spend time wif him anymore...
when he was discharged, I didn’t mke an effort to stay home accompany him as much as possible...
worst still, when he was readmitted to hosp, I didn’t mke an effort to go down everyday and even I do, I didn’t mke an effort to go down b4 dinner time so as to feed him(he was too weak to even hold the spoon)
3 weeks later, on his birthday, he was gone... every single family member was ard b4 he left everyone of us...
I actuallie did mke an effort to arrive b4 5, the normal visiting hr... but on my way mum asked me go home and pray as she forgot(earlier at bout 2 dad was admitted into icu again) I took the stupid 12 which was stuck in the stupid traffic jam, making me arrived onli at 7pm...
B4 I reach, his condition became critical... mum rushed to jurong to look for the priest to pray for dad...
Of coz, I was reprimanded by everyone for being so late... (no one listen to my explanation)
When I entered the icu, he was relying on the machine to breathe.... he was struggling... he was trying to force himself to open his eyes when he noe I arrived...
my aunt and uncle was praying, chanting for him...
all I can say is,” daddy, wake up... “
the doc mke us call mum back...
but jus when mum arrived, the doc mke everyone leave the room... so in the end, mum didn’t get to see him for the last time...
I prayed to god,” dun take him away… he did so much for everyone of us and I haven even repay him…”
soon, his lung failed, rely totally on the machine to breathe... cpr was no use... I broke down... cuz I knew it was over…
the doctors gav up saving him...
his heart finally stop at 8.08pm...
everyone, even my aunt hu jus gt back frm texas, was there...
everyone cried
my godma said daddy was brave... he waited for everyone b4 he leaves...
yes... daddy u r brave... u sacrifice for the whole family... u r the one hu gav up ur edu and worked to support aunts and little uncle edu... u r the one hu risk ur life working at offshore island so as to giv me a better life...
and u left b4 we could repay u....
I was forced to pick up myself immediately for the preparation of the funeral... mum was too lost and devastated to do anything...
Plus, instead of being choked by fishball, the hosp bill choked up to $50,000(phew, luckily there subsidies and could be deducted from medisave)
For those hu helped me out for the funeral (namely my uncles and aunts), thank you...
For those hu came for the funeral, I thank you too...

Ya… let's treasure every single moment we have from now till next year, before each and everyone of us went on to pursue our dreams or to fulfill any required duties. Who knows?! Ten years from now… will we still have the chance to play volleyball as a class like today? 'll we still remain in contact? Hope so… but by then, all of us will be real busy with our life… Although fate and time has brought all of us together and closer respectively, it is up to us to maintain the relationship. S01 will always be S01 de right?

it has hit me realli hard today, tt some ppl arnd me were leavin... as in... transferring to a poly, or is being retained... din realised tt so many were goin... and wif dis, i'm realli grateful tt all of us are where we are 2day.
it seems weird to how ppl take tings for granted til its gone. well... the yrs ending in 2 days? not literal, but u get wad i mean, and b4 u noe it, its a brand new yr 2006 with fresh new faces in school, new tutors for some, and well, new environment once again... and tt signifies a brand new start for some of us, to 4get all the unhappy past this yr, and to let bygones be bygones... but well, juz note, we onli hav 1 yr left as a class, as classmates, as people whom we meet everyday and sometimes, take for granted. so, guess we should all start treasuring every moment we have as a class now, bcos in a blink of an eye, all will b taken away. the guys, off to NS we go, the gals, jia you and make it into the university. from there on, we all start brand new lives with a brand new page of a brand new chpt in our book called life.
so yea... treasure every moment... may S01 be as it's called, "One as a class, One with all, One and only One in a memory tt will soon become"

i hav just heard from my friend about this "Great" person
<

<
<
<
MRS KANG FROM SAJC
The infamous person who invented "Project Work". The one who wanted to use such a Project to teach us about life skills like erm.. Morals( I do no see the link anywhere!) She is as deadly as Lucretia Borgia the well known poisoner. And she is as proud as a Peacock in proclaiming that the "Project work" was invented by her.
Thus, we J1 students from colleges everywhere, should give her the credit for inventing such an ingenius torture chamber without walls. It is this very project that causes us more sleepless nights than EXAMs.It is also this very project that made us stare at the computer for hours straight as we struggle to meet the deadline.
From me to Mrs Kang. Thanks so much Cher. You're the best.

i believe most pple are sensitive at different times. for example. one may not like it when another person scolds you "go and die". well, for me, i feel that these words are just as common as "eat", "sleep", "walk". there is really no need to kick up a big fuss over something that is already a norm. (THATS JUST MY OWN OPINION). i agree that every person has their own temper. they can flare up anytime. this person, C, quit being hypersensitive. period. you are driving pple nuts. you are getting on our nerves. constantly irritating us by ur actions, which you think that are rightful.. but they are not. just behave like a normal person? mininum expectation from you. You think that you are right. but you are not. you are just living life ur own way. without concerning about other's feelings! this is SELFISH! i think you had a great time pissing pple off, we had a hard time dealing with u. dont force us to the extent that we treat u, just like a piece of glass.
